One thing Chapter 9 shows in the that the past has the power and ability to stick with someone for years to come. To Sethe and Denver, Beloved reminds them of someone they knew and loved in the past. The past in haunting Sethe and Beloved in a weird way this chapter. Sethe admits that "the girls touch was also excatly like the baby's ghost" (116). There is something that happened in thier past that was so powerful to make Sethe and Denver beleive it is now after them in the form of a ghost.
The symbol of the Crystal earings in this chapter make me think about them in a different way. When Sethe first arrived at 124 Blue Stone Rd and showed Baby Suggs the earings Baby Suggs said, "put these on. Maybe they'll light the way" (111). Crystals are not only known for thier healing powers, but the ability to wish on them. Sethe is wearing the crystals earrings in hopes and wishes that Halle will be able to find her. Going forward a few years when Beloved comes into her life Beloved asks her where her earrrings are. Sethe stops wearing them after a little. Is this because she lost hope of Halle ever returning? Or has she just lost complete hope? A few days before Beloved found her before Paul D came back she was in a state of lonliness and it seemed as if she had just gave up on everything besides her daughter Denver.

Self Reliance Response
Emerson believes in the importance of individuals in society. By society Emerson is talking about the common beliefs of the government and the majority of the people. These beliefs are the beliefs that have been there for a while so society accepts them as they are. By his definition, being part of society is not being part of the ideas, but giving into them.
By Emerson's definition of society, he stresses how being part of a society takes away from the individuals in it. "Society everywhere is in conspiracy against the manhood of every one of its members." Every individual in order to be a man needs to think for himself. The famous phrase "I think therefore I am" is just what Emerson is talking about. Except thinking by his definition is thinking for yourself, and questioning others. When you go along with everything else and fail to doubt anything you give up a part of yourself.

September 11th
The day September 11th is known to everyone as the day two planes flew into the World Trade Center. Hearing the date alone rings a horrifying event. There has been a proposed plan to build a Mosque on the site of where the World Trade Center had once been. Many American's reacted outraged and disturbed by the proposal. Rev. Terry Jones, the leader of a small Florida church, took his reaction to the next level and made a plan to burn copies of the Quran with his church on September 11th.
I have to disagree Rev. Terry Jones's on two levels. First of all, on the very site of tragedy in America, we should be encouraging American Philosophy to show that we have not been defeated. Freedom of Religion is one of the great things about our country. As long as the Mosque is considerate and doesn't flaunt itself innapropriately, I see no reason to discriminate against it.
I also am completely disgusted with Rev. Jones's reaction. I do understand the other side of the argument and people who would prefer a Mosque to be built somewhere else. And even if i was opposed to the building of a Mosque at Ground Zero, I would not go as far as to burn the Quran. Burning books is completely unconstitutional. It goes against everything our country stands for. The book has caused no harm to our country. Burning this book symbolizes the type of discrimination that started tragedies like the Holocaust, and I think there are more appropriate ways of protesting.
