Self Reliance Response

Emerson believes in the importance of individuals in society. By society Emerson is talking about the common beliefs of the government and the majority of the people. These beliefs are the beliefs that have been there for a while so society accepts them as they are. By his definition, being part of society is not being part of the ideas, but giving into them.
By Emerson's definition of society, he stresses how being part of a society takes away from the individuals in it. "Society everywhere is in conspiracy against the manhood of every one of its members." Every individual in order to be a man needs to think for himself. The famous phrase "I think therefore I am" is just what Emerson is talking about. Except thinking by his definition is thinking for yourself, and questioning others. When you go along with everything else and fail to doubt anything you give up a part of yourself.

  1. I completley agree that when you go along with what is popular you lose a part of your character. Its important to stay true to yourself even if its hard to because society is pushing you down. The common belief isn't always the right belief. Individuality is important in creating and maintaining character.
